I'm totally with Douglas here... (as usual).
Since I am old, I have come to value my time. Since I am retired, I don't need to market myself.
Never even considered Facebook, Twitter, and all the rest. I do however regularly spend time here, and a few other special interest forums. The key is an opportunity to learn and share new things from/ with intellegent folks. I dare say the IQ level around here is more appreciated than the average social media.
If I were a young pup, I'd probably make use of social media to market myself, but I much prefer the ability to sit back and learn new tricks in quite anonymity.
drbgaijin: PS. If anyone can convince me that the Avid Community Forums really are a "social media network" in the nowadays use of the term - I will be gone from here for good

If we discuss things here that are NOT issues, part of the software we use from Avid, I think that the forum tends to one of the social media.
For me, email is also part of this group of sm. Whoops, sm, I said? That means....?
Sef:I think that the forum tends to one of the social media.
Social media is the social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.[1] Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content."[2]

There may be a subjectively perceived difference between various forms, subjects and reasons to join, but in essence, it's all the same principle – if you follow this definition. These Forums even reside under the "Community" section of this website, and they definitely allow creation and exchange of user-generated content – not much else, I would argue.
Not trying to force anyone to leave here, not trying to say that you cannot dislike Facebook. One is of course also allowed to use their own definition of social media, or any other phenomenon in the world for that matter.

That is funny, Job
You quote from Wikpedia, which just recently practically banned the US Congress from editing posts on Wikepdia!
You can find anything you want to find with Wikpedia. If you want a "Yes" or a "No" to a topic, just search on Wikpedia......... then take your pick.

Again, Douglas, whatever works for you is fine with me.

social media

NOUN [TREATED AS SINGULAR OR PLURAL]
Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
Not only is the Avid Community social media, but you, Douglas, are the singular example of said.
Your tutorials (that mere mortals can understand) are the largest collection of single-user created and shared content I have ever encountered. I came to these web forums, hoping to find information about how to use Media Composer more effectively. I found 200 tutorials on the subject. Were they created by Avid? No, don't be silly. They were created by another Avid customer in Japan!
So, Douglas, not only is the Avid Community unequivocally "social media", but I cite you as the chief example.
First line out of wikipedia...
"Social media is the social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks."
Wikipedia: Social MediaEDIT:
Just saw that you don't consider wikipedia a useful source of information. If that's the case, then I'd try any of these. Maybe they'll help clarify what social media is.
Social Media
Or, you can head over to a library and look it up there.

DFW Hokie:Not only is the Avid Community social media, but you, Douglas, are the singular example of said.
You really are working hard at getting me to go.
Texans seem to dislike me.
Another Texan - and a moderator at that - has openly attacked my credibility on another threa, and refused to explain what he means by the attack.
smeyers63:you really shouldn't use Douglas as your guide. Really - you shouldn't.
Then Dan has added his take on scoial media . . . . . so at the moment there are about the same number of people doing their best to convince me to leave as there have been those in support.......
There is, nowever, one flaw in your quote - which you have only cited as "Oxford University Press" - Which publication of theirs are you quoting from?
The Oxford Dictionary? The British or American version?
DFW Hokie:Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
The point in your quote that leaves things just as open as before is, " . . . or to participate in social networking" as opposed to the first part, "... enable users to create and share content.."
As I, and other have said previoussly, there are 2 uses of the words "social media" - one is about sharing information about a particular topic or subject. I actively participate in that aspect - as you pointed out, by creating over 200 tutorials with around 550,000 views. I refiuse to participate in the second meaning . . . . social networking.
But I guess, if enough of you agree that I shouldn't be used as a guide - I should definitely consider following my earlier statement and leave these forums for good.
drbgaijin: DFW Hokie:Not only is the Avid Community social media, but you, Douglas, are the singular example of said. You really are working hard at getting me to go.
Douglas, I'm fairly certain this was meant as a compliment.
And I don't think anyone is trying to get you to leave these forums by engaging in a discussion about what consitutes a social medium.
So at this point I would advise we end the discussion on who considers what to be "social media" or not. Let's agree that some of us disagree. The various points have been made.
Thanks.
Job ter Burg:Douglas, I'm fairly certain this was meant as a compliment.
Most likely you are correct, Job
Remeber it was about 6am here, cicadas arguing noisily outside, my coffee isn't ready yet, it is already 33C outside and inside . . . . need I say more?
Job ter Burg:So at this point I would advise we end the discussion on who considers what to be "social media" or not. Let's agree that some of us disagree.
This is also a reasonable comment........... I will follow your advice . . . . . . but , just to get a last word in - this thread was started by myself in the GENERAL forums to point out my total dislike of "social networking" in the modern sense.
So all comments whether for or against have actually been on topic all the way........
Back again
Let me round off by reminding everyone of the main reason for this thread.
