Maybe Avid just doesn't understand basic fractions.
To them, the year only has two quarters.
1Q is January - June.
2Q is July - December.

Actually old Avid users will still be using MC V4.05 and happy with it. They won;t be interested in paying a monthly fee and are quite happy to keep using their now more than paid for software and hardware to earn their wage.
Most of the rest will wait till December to see what new features will appear. No reason at the moment to jump to a different NLE

as you want but Drbgaijin left avid media composer for an other NLE and he is already working on new tutorials...if that is not a bad sign ....
What is happening now is known as "redefining customer expectations."
Avid has been seen for a few years now as a company that is failing to meet customer expectations.
When Louis Hernandez, Jr. took over as CEO, he had the wisdom to understand that it was not Avid who was UNDERperforming. No, the customers were OVERexpecting. And he set about on a strategy to correct this discrepancy in the marketplace.
I'd say it's working.
LOL...this is what George Orwell called "newspeak". Simply repeat the message enough times that people begin to beleive it. The thing is, people would buy into the newspeak if there weren't such glaring examples that prove the contrary. The fact that other NLE apps have been very efficient at providing 4k, advanced plugins, and more modern workflows is clear evidence that Hernandez is out of touch with reality. I have a funny feeling that the next release will continue to convince users that they are over-expecting results. Sad, just sad.
So, while Avid is under-delivering, I'm delivering 4k, 60p processed with a wide set of reasonably priced OFX, color corrected with some pretty slick correction tools in RAW(CinemaDNG) format.
Guess I live too far ahead of the times to be of much use to Avid.

There's probably nothing anyone can say to change your views but you really shouldn't use Douglas as your guide. Really - you shouldn't.
This is only July. Wait at least another week or two before committing yourself to any decisions. Media Composer hasn't just magically stopped working because the next update hasn't come yet.

while i understand that aot of people have there own systems and can upgrade and switch NLE's till there heart desires, the real deal is that most of us work for other people and have no choice what software we use. We just have to pray that Avid delivers a good product and our post manager knows when the appropriate times for upgrades are. When dealing with a 100 bay installation it could be like russian roullete.

Probably true for some, but for me I have been in control of what editor I use at work at my past two jobs. I have moved them both to Avid. Now I may be moving myself and my current employer away from Avid. I am assuming that I will upgrade at the last minute to give myself some more time and to keep current with Avid. In the mean time I will be learning another editor. I also assume that there are many others that have the same strategy. Avid blew it with the loose the ability to upgrade if you don't pay yearly deal. Give me a reason to upgrade, don't hold my ability to upgrade hostage.

I would rather have said that each user will have to judge for themselves whether to stick with MC or to look elsewhere.
Over the years, Douglas has evangelized Media Composer and has helped many of us coming from Avid Liquid adapt to MC. I think many users respect his opinion. When Douglas decided to try on a different NLE many saw that as a bad sign. I don't really think it should be interpreted that way. I think many of us feel that Avid has failed to deliver much (for us) in the past couple of years and now that we are being asked to sign-up for $300 / year we are looking around to see what else is out there. Not all of us work in the industry and so our needs can be met by other very capable options that have emerged in the last few years.
i haven't decided for myself yet. I use MC but I also use Premiere for some things. I think Edius looks very interesting and for a $300 cross-grade fee, it's certainly in the same price point as a year of MC support. For me, I can see sticking with MC for the next while but I really am looking to see what 8.1 will bring. If avid disappoints me with their choice of feature focus, that may push me away. That's why a glimps of a roadmap would be helpful. Oh well.

Interesting discussion, with ups and downs though, but sticking to the topic: You haven't convinced me that it is OK if Avid commits to release a titillating update by the end of Q2 and fails to do so, I do not enjoy the same luxury of not meeting deadlines and would be out of business if I was so unreliable, a small delay may happen, but a one month delay is way too much, especially for a company stating that a major renewal is taking place. The second issue is the total lack of communication, we were told that one of the benefits of the switch to the subscription model is that the company can communicate with customers in a more open way, well the silence is deafening! I understand that after years of "stay tuned" it would be embarrasing for anyone at Avid to write over the forums yet another "stay tuned", but simply disclosing something about 8.1 and explaining what the reasons are for the delay and making a new delivery deadline would have been much better than just being silent showing no care for the customers.
Still in a wait and see state....
