After over 6 years using my Canon HV20, it was really time to look for a new hammer. It became a diaster to capture 3 tapes without problems, like TC errors, missing things or what ever.

The current way of importing clips is by file and not by tape. Sorry for the Canon HV20, but it is really old fashion now.

After my earlier requests for information on a new camera, the Panasonic camera's were praised. And the current (?) one is the HC X920. Peter Beek told and showed me the predecessor for this camera and I was immediately impressed. What the most important things were for me, is the steady view, manual ring, easy to use operating icons. real HD in stead of HDV and, of course, the easy way for importing the files to my PC (and MC 6.0.5).

The camera Peter has, has also an internal memory of 32GB so one could start immediately shooting.

It took me more than 2 hours before I realised that my camera does NOT have the internal memory. It keeped telling me "No Card". So I had rush to the store and buy a 64GB SDXC card (Samsung brand). Without formatting that card, I could should my first scenes.

So why don't I have the internal memory? The type of camera should have been X920M. Notice the 'M'. This camera is, AFAIK, not in the stores in The Netherlands. Frankly speaking, I think that the price of that camera would be more than the price of a single 32GB SDXC card.

All new things come with problems, but so far, this is the only problem I had.

I decided to shoot in [HA] that is 1080/50i The camera can handle 50p, but as this in not usuable in MC, I go the 50i road. In this camera there is an even better format available: [PH]. Maybe I will test what is the best for me: [HA] or [PH]. The camera tells me that I could shoot over 8 hours on my 54GB SDXC card. I think that 4 hours will  be more realistic. It is enough for me.

In this X920, there is also a horizon correction. For me, very often shooting scenes with a not leveled horizon, really a very pretty feature.

I don't tell you about all features of that camera. I have to find out for myself what is possible now, which was not before.

Until MC supports your camera's format, I think it's clear you need to switch to another NLE, or use it strictly for offline.

Well if the camera shoots 1080p50 ...and MC doesn't support 1080p50 ... it's a pretty black and white example of MC not being suitable for the camera.  Customers have been asking for that format support for many years now.. it was just a matter of time until it became a clear cut issue.  This is one of those times. 

Would YOU want to edit with a piece of software that will degrade the footage you shot? (rhetorical question, for clarity)

I don't understand this reply either. The Panasonic camera's (in the 900 series) can produce besides 50p format, also the 1080/50i formats in AVCHD. There 4 formats to choose from. I use [HA] after 50p, in the X920, the third in quality. There is a (new) format [PH] that is even better than [HA]. I have to compare these two in the next days.

The [HA] format is imported right away in MC 6.0.5 and shows up transcoded as I have specified. No tricks, no conversion.

Maybe tfg thinks that the camera is 50p only? There is also a format I-frame for non Windows systems.

It is all in the Setup.

From the camera to MC, I use the usb-cable in the package and the the AE HD 5.0 writer that also comes with the camera. I have test this already and works as expected and desired.

Appologies if I wasn't clear.  It seems that the camera operator wants to shoot 1080p50 (or is learning towards it, either way).  I'm aware that the camera shoots various formats, but he is talking about 1080p50 specifically, and therefore my answer was addressing that format, and how it fits in the context of using Media Composer.

Ahhh - Sorry Sef - I misjudged your intentions for mentioning the 50p output in this way.  My appologies for throwing the thread on a tangent.

i use beside my canon XH A1 also 2 camera's from Panasonic, the HDC TM 700 (TM = twin memory =internal 32 Gb and card)

and also a HDC - SD 900.  all 3 camera's working well with MC.
