Not much new stuff for a major release. It looks like nothing more than cleanup on the product line.
We loose Newscutter (which I use), but at least we gain a new option in the new MC to switch the timeline lasso between the MC and NC behavior. I find lassoing in NC to be much better.

Q: I see that this version is designated as Media Composer 8, but I don’t see any big new features in this release like Avid usually delivers. A: Don’t worry—they’re coming. For this initial launch of Media Composer, we want to make sure that our new subscription offerings have a smooth deployment and that all of our new subscribers get the best experience. We are even creating a forum on community.avid.com specifically for the subscription offerings to ensure that customers receive the correct information, pricing and guidance. We will then release a software update that includes many exciting new features, coming later in Q2, 2014.

I think the plan is MC 8.0 is just a release to migrate to new licensing scheme. Major features will be released shortly as part of 8.x.

Dom Q. Silverio:Major features will be released shortly as part of 8.x.
That is what is promised, but these features will have to be pretty good for me not to update till the last possible moment. Any update sooner then dec 2014 will not be in my advantage given that I have to pay again in a year time for the next installment of the contract/upgrade. As it is now, a .0 version with little changes besides stripping phrasefind and scriptsync for the time being is hardly an incentive. And lets not forget, the small shops are usually the first to take the plunge, especially since they are not obligated to invest in expensive ISIS upgrades. I do hope this won't be the last nail to Avid's already troublesome cashflow.
"Software bugs are impossible to detect by anybody except the end user"
If you already own and Avid version then you have to subcribe before the end of 2014 or you will lose the upgrade option.
Perpetual versions will only be upgradable if you are on and remain on support.
So a lot of folks will be looking with interest to see what develops before the year end.

Here's my question: Is blackmagic broken in 8.0 like it is in 7.0.4? I'd really hate to have to pay the $299 now instead of towards the end of the year as planned, just to get avid to work on my new mac pro.
Anyone have input on this?
Im running MC6, will the Demo work without interfering with MC6. While planning to up to MC8.0 , there is no hurry and looking at new PC before I do.

I'm baffled — why would anyone "upgrade" to MC8 if it doesn't have anything new or improved?
Sorry,not so clever.
I have Symphony 7.03.
Do I pay to upgrade to Ver 8. ( no mention at the shop )( does not give a version )
It is available in my downloads selections.
Please advise.
Cheers, Radman.

I think it is more for new purchases. It is probably a good plan. It allows a smaller group to test the new licensing system in a real world scenario. Iron out any issues before the upgrades and the subsequent rush to purchase.
Yes. You need to purchase the Support contract ($299) for MC with Symphony option.

Hi Dom,
i PRESUME THE SOFTWARE DOES NOT SHUT DOWN AFTER ONE YEAR IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO UPDATE.
Just in case! Better to check.
