Unable to capture HDV from Z7U in MC7

Hi, folks! Just switched from FCP (3-7) to MC7, and am trying to capture HDV shot in 24p (not 24a) on a Sony Z7U. The camera is also my deck. While I've searched all over the net for this information, have watched numerous videos, and already tried many many ways to move forward, Avid simply refuses to capture this footage.

I've followed all videos on setting up my system as well as capture preferences yet none of the tutorials encounter a hiccup in the process that they help you remedy. (Odd that so few videos/threads have info for MC7.) My problems began with a "coincidence" issue which I checked the box "relax coincidences" for, and that hasn't reappeared. Then it became so many different ways of telling me that the video signal was good yet nothing was captured. I've tried the simple things like switching cords, through trashing preferences, starting everything over, etc. I try controlling the deck, then having a generic deck. Nothing. I try TC (which I need), and without TC. Nothing. My raster is 1440 as my settings are 1080/23.97p (I filmed in 24p). I've left the system the ability to capture for 70 mins. The longest clip it has captured is under 2 mins. I switched pre-roll to 1 second, down from 6. Nothing. The Avid just keeps stopping with another error code. I've tried writing straight to my Lacie external to no avail, and switching to an internal drive, again to no avail. I've checked and unchecked the options for HDV in the Capture settings (markers/clips), yet nothing happens.

Does it have something to do with capturing on "Trial" software? My MacBook Pro has my purchased MC7, while my quad-core Mac Pro (which I'm using to capture) has the 30-day trial software. Any ideas?

There is a program called DV Split for capturing HDV footage when all else fails.  Do a Google search, it is a free program.  It worked fine for me.

    TOPDOG:

But we don´t know if all fails yet.

Hdv split is a very last rescue tool for fast turnarounds and if there is errors on the tape it will be errors in the media brought inside Avid as this just is a fast import - copying process from the origin codec on the tape.

No future batch capture possibilities from inside of Avid so it´s a create and forget workflow if you don´t save all the files to be used once again if you need to redo or rebuild.

If you can live with that workflow to save all the files for the future I would rather just live capture using maybe a Matrox box.

Re: Unable to capture HDV from Z7U in MC7

From what you've said you may have already tried this but when I capture from HDV tape by firewire I have to specify the deck, (camera), model under Add deck in the Deck Configuration settings. Generic will never work for me. Raster also has to be set to 1440.

Recent versions of Media Composer have been flaky with DV and especially HDV capture over Firewire. I had a very long case running with support over this issue in MC5 (MC4 was good as gold). It seemed to improve in MC6 but I could not get it to work with HDV in MC7. I think Premiere Pro CS6 works well so not sure why Avid can't do it. I live in a PAL area so we are all 25fps but I don't think that matters. You have done everything I'd suggest and this has nothing to do with the trial version. One thing - have ONLY the camera connected to your Firewire port. Nothing else.

Thank you, Tomas. My settings in Avid for HDV are concurrent with any and all posts/video based on capturing HDV shot in 24p. Thank you!

Did you mean HDVSplit? I have a Mac, so it won't work with my system unfortunately, and there aren't many options. I may try to capture in iMovie or FCP7 and try to import into Avid. Thank you, though!

Re: Unable to capture HDV from Z7U in MC7

Are you able to capture HDV using a deck/camera? I tried it both ways with the Avid able to control the camera, and then again with "generic" hoping to capture the entire tape. Neither works. Testing it out today, with different wires, won't even let me capture a frame this time. "Signal present but no video captured" is generally what always pops up. There was a new one about TC break, but I checked the box to procedd through TC break yet it's still popping up. This is spiralling downhill for me. lol

Camera is the only thing attached. :/ Sounds like HDV and Avid don't want to play in MC7.

I have about 250 tapes captured and is also able to batch capture old projects so it works here.

This with the official HDV formats, as you have used 24p there might be problems, not sure, so you are saying that the Apple link I posted above gave you nothing

You are saying this works in Media Composer 7 (Mac) with HDV? Which deck or camera? 25 fps or 29.97 fps? I'll have to retest as I had no luck here.

HDV 50i and it´s with a couple of cams, from memory some Canon cams as well as with my own HC1e.

And no customized HDV formats, just plain standard HDV

Ah, the million dollar HDV capture question. I heard recently of an iMovie solution. :-)

Yes, HDV split is just a hero! The HDV cature issue has been asked a lot since the begining, and hope it's not forgotten..just do a search.
