Done a lot of tests and reading up and RAID 5 is a real no no. RAID 6 possibly but the write hit is just too high.
RAID 10 is the simplest setup and a dud drive is easy to rebuild (unlike RAID 5) and during rebuild you get the lowest performance hit.
I know a number of folks who have had a drive fail in RAID 5 and then lost the lot as the extra load of trying to rebuild pulled another drive down then it's game over.
Storage is so cheap nowadays and the more spinning platters you have the more it will fly.

Hey Dom,
yeah, I got rid of that "Hot Plate" quadro 4000 last year and I have a Quadro K4000 now; eventhough I keep eyeing the GTX cards, for sure.
Caldigit make a pretty handy combo usb3 and e-sate pci-e card. Definitely worth looking in to to maximise your connections. Not too pricey and they have very good customer service.
