    Re: RED workflow advice

I just wanted to add that we here we don't do step 4...and Resolve seems to work with little extra effort.

We simply edit in DNxHD then export our AAF linked to the transocded clips.  Resolve is able to relink to R3D (and whatever ever other camera media) that is used.

    Dan:

Before you do any of that, do a small test with a few clips.  It's a lot easy than it might seem.

    Good luck.

Thank you very very much Dan!

Hopefully that will do the trick for me!

It's a shame Avid seems to be taking so long to transcode the r3d files. RED CIne X seemed to transcode much quicker. I've lowered the debayering to 'half good' but it's still taking ages. Seems like 4 times longer!

What have you got the de-beyer setting set for in media creation under teh Render tab?

I suspect it's still on the default full setting which is insane for HD work.

For finishing I'd be loking at half good or half best but for offline 1/4 or even 1/8 are often ok.

Been asking Avid to change the default to something sensible for ages but still it ships set to full and folks try one transcode and give up on Avid as a solution. Such a simple change and yet so hard to apply it seems.

    Re: RED workflow advice

I tried the render over night again last night and checked the render tab in media creation and it seemed to complete it so my only guess is that my computer was low on memory when I first tried it.

    Thanks for the advice Pat.

    Dan:
    7) Export graded media and AAF for After Effects/MC/Etc
    (Davinci Lite won't export 4k)

    Hi Dan,

I just wanted to check this point out.

If I grade in resolve; when I export the AAF to after effects will it be an AAF with new created media from resolve and therefore HD (as opposed to 4k) if I only use resolve lite....or will it internally render new clips in 4k and allow me to send them via the AAF to AE so I can continue to add affects in 4k....OR..will it just apply all my colour work to the original RED clips as meta data and then therefore allow me to send the 4k AAF sequence to AE?

Thanks again for any advice on this.

    Re: RED workflow advice

I'm pretty sure that if you want to use your graded media from Davinci in another piece of software you're gonna have to render it out (Quicktime/MXF/Etc) and since you're using the Lite version of Davinci you wont be able to export it at 4K.

If you want to grade and export 4K, you could always do the CC in After Effects.  Follow the same workflow and you should be able to use the same AAF in After Effects that you would have used in Davinci.  Obviously the CC controls in After Effects are pretty lame when compared to Davinci, but if you need 4K it could work...

    Re: RED workflow advice

I thought as much. I might have to upgrade to davinci full version then. I could use Smoke I guess but I'm still waiting for autodesk to sort it out a bit. I nearly lost a client because of the problems it gave me last time I used it for a job!

The other problem I will have then is not being able use lots of editing trickery I'm used to using. Since davinci doesn't support timewarps and fluid morphs.

The 4k workflow does seem more limited I must say. The only times I've used it previously was when I could finish in hd (ie through avid).

    thanks again for the info.

They should release a new version that gives editors more flexibility without compromising established/proven workflows.

    Job ter Burg:

Resolve Lite 10 supports 4K. Resolve 10.1 also supports its own FluidMotion timewarps and FrameFlex.

I thought it replaced time warps using fluid morph with a lower quality resolve version. May not be the case though it's just what I read.

when you say it supports 4k do you mean it allows conforming of 4k (internal) or can I get 4k out somehow to continue a 4k workflow after resolve?

Yes, 4K UHD, not 4K DCI. Bear in mind that this is FREE. You can also spend the extra $995 and get the additional features. Or buy a camera and get Resolve+ for free.  Full list of features by model here: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/compare

    Re: RED workflow advice

I've done an edit where there's quite a few 3dwarp effect (Scaling and position), timewarps (Fluidmotion and reversals) and I guess a flop or two.

As I understand it Resolve lite 10.1 can handle these effects? Will the AAF be able to bring that information to DaVinci?

A bit of a technical thing: Will the scaling effects get into DaVinci if they are simply a filler layer above several clips or do I have to put it on the actual video (3dwarp effects)

Also I have the option of sending the edit to Baselight. Will that be able to handle these editing trickeries better?

We want to be able to finish and export from the grading program.
