Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

    Marianna:

    You should using:

    - Mac OS X 10.9 or 10.9.1

    - MC 7.0.3  ( making sure all OLDER versins and avid files are removed)

    - MSP_MXF Plug-In    1.10.1.6400   which is installed with the MC 7.x application

    - You need to manually install the Canon XF AMA plugin version 2.03

Give Dom's suggestion a try and see if this works for you.

    Dom posted:

FYI - I created a folder called "CanonC300" and placed the "CONTENTS" folder in there. I placed it in my root directory and AMA linked to the "CanonC300" folder.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

I am trying to consolidate C300 clips (MC7.03 with latest canon plugin installed). Some 23.97 1080p and some 60fps 720p

AMA link works fine but once consolidated the new mxf files wont let me export QT ref as they are still long GOP by the looks of the error message. I am instructed to do a custom export but not sure what this is

It's making me think I should just transcode everythng to DNx115 (good enough for a quick grade in an emergency - i am doing several short commercial spots) and will relink to the originals in Resolve for the finals.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Finally, I re-installed my whole system and everything seems to be working fine now! I really can't say what was wrong, as my folder structure is still the same. My guess is that my number of files was so big; it took Avid about 15-20min before I could see the "SCANNING" dialog box.

For the record, because I have hundred of hours of footage from the C300, here is the folder structure I use  to keep track of every day of shooting that comes in:

    ROOT OF DRIVE / PROJECT NAME / SHOOTING LOCATION NAME / CARD 1 / CONTENTS / CLIPS001 / MXF'S

I simply point AMA LINK (using “Autodetect AMA plugin from” the AMA LINK window) to my “PROJECT NAME” folder and it created BINs based on the sub folders.

So far, with timelines averaging 45minutes, everything seems to be working fine. A little bit slow, but nothing I can't live with. I am still wondering about something:

If my project become slower, will I be able to transcode my Canon MXF to something more “Avid friendly” and have my already edited sequences relink to those new files?

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Glad it worked. Now is my time. I can't see to link to AMA with C300 footage. My system is PC windows 7.

I can AMA link too BMCC DNxHD footage but I can't see to AMA link Canon C300 footage. I do have installed the canon XF 64bit plugin....

My AMA settings are link to volume...

My root drive is my internnal raid.  DATA (D:)/Phil Interview/A Cam/Roll1/CONTENTS/CLIPS001/BB3822

I did try to put to "contents" folder on the root directory but still doesn't read it...

I'm searching on old posts here, creative cow too and ashley Kennedy tuts but I can't see find a solution yet. Please, if anyone has a tip, please let me know. Thanks

You need to volume link to the "Roll1" folder. Basically, the folder ABOVE the CONTENTS folder.

Try manually selecting the Canon AMA plugin during the AMA linking process. (Auto is the default)

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Yes!!! Thanks Dom.  What I did in the AMA settings, I created a new Bin called AMA Source Media and then in my file/AMA link I did what you told me. Files of Type: Canon XF Plugin 64 and File name: Roll1...and done..

    Thanks Again Dom...

It seems the latest Canon AMA plugin with MC 7.03 is unable to resolve linking when set to "Auto" and/or when the target virtual volume/folder is too deep.

    I had the same problem...

    Download this for PC- http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200213002.html

Or this for Mac - http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200213102.html

I have the same problem, tried everything but I guess the new Avids can't seem to read the C300 files natively in AMA (which is strange because my Avid 6 was reading them perfectly before I upgraded to 8.2. Now I can't even read the files in my timeline that I already made before I upgraded!)

My workaround was simply Sorenson Squeezing them into ProRes 422 .mov files. Pretty unfortunate.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

It appears that tne current Canon AMA plugin (v2.0.3) doesn't yet support MC 8.2, but rather only up to MC 7.  Camera manufacturers are responsible for updating their AMA plugins.

Would this explain why 5D MKIII footage doesn't work well with AMA either? It's always freezing and bugging

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Assuming you're able to AMA the 5D clips into a bin, then the plugin is likely not the problem in this case.  Canon's DSLR clips can be pretty processor-intensive to play when only linked via AMA, however.  Most editors I know either transcode these immediately to some flavor of DNxHD or perhaps make selects from the AMAed clips and then transode these.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

It won't let me import or transcode them either. It freezes and does teh rainbow wheel of death after a few clips each time.

Am I seriously going to have to just learn Premier and make the jump? At least a third of my work is on Canon and none of it will work for me (whereas it all worked fine with Avid 6 for me...)

Or do you think maybe I should try re-installing Avid 8.2? Am I even allowed to, I have a yearly subscription and last time I tried to reinstall Avid they didn't let me. Nobody else has seemed to have any better luck when reinstalling it, but that's my only guess at this point. So discouraged about this, real bummer and I have a deadline to make right now.
