C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

I've been a long time editor on AVID with tape based production.

I will soon be starting a movie editing that was shot with the Canon C300 on Media Composer 7.03, OS X Maverick.

I am looking to find a good tutorial on the suggested workflow with C300 MXF footage and I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction.

I am NOT looking to transcode the MXF files from the C300, and I was hoping to be able to link everything through AMA, but I have no experience in that matter. (Folder structure, c-LOG, etc.)

With such a popular camera, I was puzzled that I couldn't find any clean instruction/workflow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Jean

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Sorry I've not made a tutorial, but I'll outline my general process...

C300 footage is basically the same as Sony XDCAM HD422. It's so similar, in fact, that Avid sees it as the same video format. This means that Avid is capable of dealing with it natively.

The process I use then, is basically:

    1) AMA Link to source media
    2) Add any necessary metadata (I usually add 'Tape' label)
    3) Consolidate media onto normal media drive.

That's it basically. The consolidate, because Avid supports the video format natively, is really just a file copy process, from wherever the source files are to the normal Avid MediaFiles folder structure. This way we get the fast access benefit of AMA, and the solid media management benefits of Avid native media. My process before this point is usually to copy the media from the source cards on to two separate drives, naming them appropriately etc. I then do the AMA from one of these source drives, which are only connected to the system for the purpose of copy media off camera cards, and importing media to Avid. The rest of the time they are stored securely (and separately).

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

    Thank you for your help.

So I've been playing around for the last hours with some test footage.

I have installed the Canon XF Plugin 64 for Avid Media Access 2.0.3 but the "MXF AMA PLUGIN" (stated here) don't seem to be available for MC7.03, or maybe it is "included", no note on that.

I've put my files in a folder at the root of my HD, in the usual C300 folder structure: Macintosh HD/TEST C300/CONTENTS/CLIPS001/AA0208 . I am able to import a single clip if I "force" the profile "MXF" (can't use anything else) on import. But I can't seem to load a whole folder in a bin. I don't know why and this is going to be necessary as I will have hundred of cards to transfer.

    What am I doing wrong ? Do I have the good plugins ? Here is a list from console: p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

I don't think I have any Canon footage readily available, but are you doing Link to Files or Link to Volume? I think you need to do Link to Volume and pick the folder that would be the card's root, so Macintosh HD/TEST C300 in your case I believe.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

There does not seem to be a "LINK TO VOLUME" anymore in MC7. Only "AMA LINK" as you can see on my screen shot.

Do you think the plain "MXF" is the way to go or I should see something more specific to Canon ?

    Thank you.

    Dylan,

Do you use MC7 and were you able to link to complete folder or did you have to select each file manually ?

In MC 7, link to volume and file has been combined in to one command.

Link to the folder containing the entire Canon C300 files and not just the MXF.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Thank you, your guide was helpfull but still no chance for me. I've tried every folder just to be sure without any luck.

Are you aware of conflict with OS X Maverick ? I'm still having the feeling I dont have the propper plugin for my C300 MXF file...  As I said earlier I have installed the Canon XF Plugin 64 for Avid Media Access 2.0.3 but the "MXF AMA PLUGIN" (stated here) don't seem to be available for MC7.03

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

I'll try to test this early next week.

Edit: Ah, actually I can't test - I don't have a Mavericks system available to me at all. I can only test the process in Windows. Hopefully someone else can verify the workflow.

The MXF AMA plugin is included with the Media Composer install.

The MXF AMA plugin is installed as part of MC installation. You have it:

Edit: it seems Canon's AMA plugin is not Mavericks ready yet.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

Thank you so much (everybody) for trying to help me.

I can’t believe it is so hard to make it work. MC7 has been release for a more than 6 months and Canon C300 for a few years. I have been able to make it work in FCP7 in matter of seconds…

If anybody is willing to make some test, I have put online a few test clips I shot this morning. Its just 3 clips of a few seconds, straight out of the CF CARD, with the normal directory structure. It’s just 200MB.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

    It worked for me.

I just installed Mavericks 10.9.1 this week on my MBP 2011 Thunderbolt.

    Installed MC 7.03

Installed Canon XF AMA plugin version 2.03.

    From my Avid Console

    Link To AMA Volume -> /Volumes/Mac/DQS Software/CanonC300/

    MSP Used:[ Plugin Name = MSP_MXF Plug-In Avid Technology, Inc. Version = 1.10.1.6400 ]

FYI - I created a folder called "CanonC300" and placed the "CONTENTS" folder in there. I placed it in my root directory and AMA linked to the "CanonC300" folder.

Re: C300 MXF & Media Composer Workflow

    You should using:

    - Mac OS X 10.9 or 10.9.1

    - MC 7.0.3  ( making sure all OLDER versins and avid files are removed)

    - MSP_MXF Plug-In    1.10.1.6400   which is installed with the MC 7.x application

    - You need to manually install the Canon XF AMA plugin version 2.03

Give Dom's suggestion a try and see if this works for you.

    Dom posted:

FYI - I created a folder called "CanonC300" and placed the "CONTENTS" folder in there. I placed it in my root directory and AMA linked to the "CanonC300" folder.
