    MC7 trial running very slow

    Hello AVID community!

I've finally started out on the long road to Media Composer proficiency, downloaded the MC7 trial and applied my many years of FCP and Premiere knowledge as best I can. It was a little disappointing to find that MC7 runs very slow on my machine, taking sometimes up to a second to playback a single clip in the timeline, and about 30 seconds of spinning beachball when importing an .mp3, only to be told it's an incompatible format.

I'm using a late 2011 Macbook Pro, OSX 10.8.4, 2.5 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 6770M, internal SSD drive. This is more than enough to keep Premiere, AE and FCP chugging along like happy little sailors, however even the most basic of functions are a major chore for MC7.

Has anyone some advice as to where I should start looking for answers? I'm chomping at the bit to get editing with MC7, it's just impossible to consider using right now with such painful lags and thinking time.

Oh - and one other little quirk: today I switched between VLC (playing music) and MC7 and noticed a big leap in volume. Any clues as to what this may be?

    Thanks for your time,

One thing re many aplications on the same machine is that they tend to battle over codecs. It has always been recommended to install MC first when constructing a system.

Of course that is a no go in your situation, MC is not presently qualified for the latest Apple OS revision, and you have to use the certified version of Quicktime as well.

Dell Display U2713HM(2560x1440), AMD FX8350 8core, AMD 990FX mobo, 32gig-DDR3-1600, Quadro K620/GTX260/core 216, Audigy2zs, 1TB SSD system drive, 2TB SATA... [view my complete system specs]

    Using MC 8.4. Avid FX6.4, Vegas Pro 15/ DVD Architect 6pro, DVDit6.4proHD, CCE Basic, TmpGe Express4, TmpGe Authoring Works 4, DVDLab-Studio. Sony EX-1R, Canon XH-A1, GL2, GL1, Canon EOS 60D

Like TVJohn mentioned, you need to run the MC trial like you would the commericla version - they are the same.  INstal it first then proceed to add on.   The caveats and requirements for the Trial are the same so fine tuning the system is what wil get you the best performance.

    1. you should be using the 7.0.2 version which can be obtained from the download center and used in Trial Mode.  Login in here:   if you dont have a master acocunt then create one.  On the second page request a DL center acocunt under Linked Avid Accounts and link it.  then you can access the 7.0.2 software and run that in trial mode.

    2. you only need 16 GB allocated to the app if you are doing a lot of HD, 3D stereoscopic and etc.... or if you have a lot of bins open whcih I would assume you dont since it is the trial you are using.

    3.  QT X is approved for use with 7.0.x

    4.  make sure you are on the correct graphics card driver which can be found on the RadMe for 7.0.2

    5.  Some Intel i5 and dual core i7-based systems qualified for previous versions of MC have been qualified for basic Media Composer 7.x functionality.  Workflows involving Background Transcode, Dynamic Media Folders, Long GOP media editing, XAVC, J2k, full-frame stereoscopic 3D, FrameFlex 4k, Raw format AMA plug-ins and other high-performance workflows will require a quad-core i7 processor or higher......  Just an FYI.

    6.  The OS for 7.0.2 should be Lion 10.7.5 or Mtn Lion 10.8.4

    Give that a whirl.....
