MC 6.0.5 for example which is the latest in that code base - works with
Lion 10.7.4, 10.7.5 as well as Mtn Lion 10.8.2, 10.8.3 and 10.8.4
You might have an issue with Limited HD playback but you should be ok. The rub here is that we dont sell MC 6.x any longer but if you go on the Download Center - you can download and try it. http://esd.avid.com/ProductList.aspx

I run MC 6.5 on almost that exact same system, MBP mid 2009, running 10.8.4. I have the 2.8 GHz processor rather than 2.66 - otherwise, I think you might have an identical system.
System drive, if you can find something like a 7200 RPM hybrid drive, that can be a nice boost. Me, I have a 750GB 7200 RPM hybrid system drive, and I also replaced the optical drive with a second internal hard drive for media - 750GB, 7200rpm HDD - not hybrid.
Works pretty well - I don't do much HD on it, lots of DV. I'll often use it as a way to continue on projects that I start on my main system at home. I'll transcode my raw video to something like 15:1 to save space, put it on the laptop, and edit. If I have more space available at any given time, maybe I'll use DV, or maybe a lower-grade DNxHD.
But in general, yes - I'd say you can use it to experiment and learn. Install the trial, and see how you like it!

It seems hard on the on the on line store where i usually make my purchases to find a sdd 7200 rpm, but there are a lot of 5400 sdd good deals, there is a differences noticeable? theres an improvment between an 7200 rpm (not hybrid) with a 5400 sdd?
