    MC Trial restrictions.

I was just wondering. At the time of MC5 and before the trial versions would expire when opening a project that was older then 30 days. Is this still the case in MC 6.5 and MC7?

This doesn't make sense, a trial version expiry date is determined by files in the registry, not by opening an old project, I don't recall seeing this behaviour, AFAIK it isn't a problem.

I have seen many posts where the trial period is shortened or invalidated by opening old project / bins from older projects. So I think there is an issue here.

It was definitly an issue in the trials of MC 3.5, MC 4 and MC 5. But it was never clearly stated in the trial FAQ or any other document. Now with an MC7 trial I have been able to open older projects and did not see any issue. But that doesn't mean that they are not there. With MC 6 and 6.5 I'm not sure.

I'm asking cause I've been asked to upgrade a vista + MC4 system to Win 7 + MC6.5.3 but for economic reasons the order of the new license will take 2 weeks or so. Will the trial open all of the multiple years old projects that are on this machine?

Of course I have the option of creating images of the OS and MC.. or replacing the OS drive with a new one, but it would be nice to be sure before I do a "format c:".

    Re: MC Trial restrictions.

Because of a dongle fault I had to run MC7 for some weeks in trial mode.  I was working with an old project part of that time, and it didn't cause me any problems.  Everything just worked.

But I'd still definitely create an image if you're going to do a clean install.

Thx John, That's what I wanted to know. I will definitely create an image.

Remains the questions why Avid does not mention this in the trial FAQ?

    Re: MC Trial restrictions.

We did never manage to install any AMA plugin to our trial-version.

Is it suposed to be a limitation.

    Re: MC Trial restrictions.

Is there an official list of what the limitations are, if any, on the MC7 trial? Also, when does the tiral begin - from install or is it when you activiate the trial?

    Thanks

No limitations at all, it just will stop working after 30 days of the install.

Also, be sure to use the latest certified ama plugins, avid.com/ama and to do a clean uninstall of 6,5 or earlier removing all of the old ama plugins also if that means to manually trash some old Avid folders or files situated into those folders.

Thanks for the info. And the time starts once you install - there is no trial activation screen like the Adobe stuff?

    Re: MC Trial restrictions.

First time you open it up you get an option to run it in trial mode and then it starts to count down, I actually don´t know if it starts to countdown already at the initial install, once you have it installed you might to want to start try it anyhow, if you aren´t going to try it at once there might not be any need to install it until you have the time to try it  .Smile
