    MC6.5 and AVCHD Import?

    Folks:

As always, thanks for the great forum and whatever help you might provide. Here's my issue today -

I recently purchased a Sony NX70U HD camcorder which stores files in AVCHD format. One minor issue is that it seems to record in bursts of a few minutes, so if I'm recording an interview it saves for let's say three minutes then breaks into another save file, and I lose a second or two of the shot/interview. If anyone knows the NX70U, is there a way to make it record in a single clip?

Of MUCH greater importance to me is that I was told Media Composer 6+ would import native AVCHD, eliminating my need to transcode the original AVCHD files into Quicktime (which seems to lose sync and is a hassle anyway). Well, I bit the bullet and bought MC6.5 but when I try to import the native AVCHD files Avid says, "This type of MPEG file is not supported."

Great! Buy a program for the sole purpose of importing a certain type of file (told by Avid it would work) and it doesn't. Suggestions?

    Thanks! Tom

"... when I try to import the native AVCHD ..."

Importing takes too long.  Instead, AMA Link to the files.  You'll need to download and install the AVCHD AMA Plugin.  If the clps don't play smoothly (sytem specs determine this) you can Transcode them into DNx,

    Re: MC6.5 and AVCHD Import?

    Randall:

Okay, downloaded and installed the AMA Plugin per your link (thanks) but when I try to "Link to AMA file(s)" I get an error saying Avid is "Unable to link to file or volume" and that I "...may need to download & install the AMA plug-in from the Avid AMA website. See Console for more information."

Initially I had my AVCHD files stores on a regulr hard drive, so (thinking speed might be an issue) I copied them to my SSD drive but still get the same problem. The guides mention I will need to perform a one-time activation of the Dolby AC-3 codec, but I can find no means of performing this...?

Sorry to be lame, but any other suggestion to contionue this venue?

Running a quick search in the help file for Dolby AC-3 codec  returns basic instructions on how to license the codec for use.

Are you shooting SD resolution?  Your error messages and problems are consistent with that.

    Re: MC6.5 and AVCHD Import?

Hmmm. I don't believe so (hadn't known/thought shooting SD was an option with an HD camcorder - especially if the files saved are AVCHD...)? Now, the files I am using for my test are not originals - I downloaded the master files from my SD crad, saved them to a media drive/fodler, then mad e backup of THAT folder to a BluRay data disk. After wiping my drive, installing MC6.5, I copied a few of those backed up on BR to my media drive and have been trying to import/AMA link thos with no success...?

    Re: MC6.5 and AVCHD Import?

It can.  The individual files may have an .mpg extension instead of .mts

That's a very circuitous route, but as long as you kept the folder structure intact that shouldn't be the problem.

    Re: MC6.5 and AVCHD Import?

Yes, it is circuitous - not my normal way of doing things but figured it might suffice for a test. They files DID retain an .mts extension... Thaniks again for the suggestions.

Did you see this post of mine

also notice that 1080 50p and 1080 60p not is supported, Squeeze is free with the 64 bits Avid to do that conversion

Yes, just checked my authorizations and saqw that Squeeze was available to authorize with MC6+. Am working with Avid now to figure out how to do that.

    Thanks for the assists!

You´re welcome, with 6,5 Avid introduced the J2k codec that supports 1080 50 and 60 p, you might want to use that codec in Squeeze when you transcode your media.
