Re: just announced at NAB: Media Composer 6.1

    George Angeludis:

    MXO2 broken on Mac side?

Yep, Avid gets unresponsive when Audio Scrub is turned on. Might of course be a Matrox driver issue, but there isn't a lot of activity on their side either. Bypassing the MXO2 and enabling FSP isn't an option because the FSP also is broken. Last time I checked, 6.0 was released 6 months ago... What annoys me is that apparently, Avid really made sure that with V6.0, the newly supported Kona and Decklink cards of the FCP crowd would work without any issues. Which is of course a good thing, but I would 've expected the same level of commitment for the Avid users that invested in a MXO2 workflow that worked quite well since 2010 when V5 was released.

Anyway as I said, 5.53 works great, but it's frustrating I can't use 6.0 (which for the rest seems really good) because of this.

Yeah, I can't use my MXO2 fully either, because of the trimming issues when audio scrub is enabled. And it's not an easy rollback to 5.x because of the updates to Lion and BCC 8.x that went along with it. Hoping for a fix sooner than later.

AFAIK, all companies have the same access level to the Avid I/O API. It is up to them to make the drivers. Decklink or AJA is not perfect either. The same Audio Scrub issues have been reported on both hardware. I know because I have a Kona 3G at home that often locks up during scrub.

5.5.3.3 is compatible with Lion 7.3 and Boris can give you a serial for BCC7 if you own BCC8.

Jumped to that conclusion after having read some blogs including Walter Biscardi's. He phased out FCP7 in favor of MC6.0 because it works flawlessly with his Kona3 cards.

Anyway, I'm sure Matrox is partly to blame for this but at least after four months of bitching, they were able to reproduce the issue on March 30th. So I suppose we'll have a solution in the next four months or so. It's a pity that the BM Intensity Pro also has issues. Is it so hard to have a cheap and troublefree HDMI monitoring solution on 6.0 ?

    Totally agree.

I am giving all companies involved some slack... for now. It is absolutely a new feature for Avid and a new API that Matrox, Blackmagic and AJA have to deal with it.

Hopefully, MC 6.1 and new drivers will involve some bug squashing.

Re: just announced at NAB: Media Composer 6.1

Agree as well.  Since we don't "need" the features of 6, we are sticking with 5.5 for a little while longer.  It will just take a little more time for the manufacturers and Avid to get the new open format working better.  This was honestly expected since MC 6 is a huge change in code since it went to 64-bit and this is most manufacturers first time at interfacing their gear with Avid . . .

I have to differ as to using Looks or anything 64bit.

MC6 is a lot but really a lot lot faster when it comes to rendering timelines with heavy compositions

For example an 8 minute timeline (SD 16:9) with heavy effects on it needs 20 minutes at MC6

(now with Quadro it does takes lesser).

At MC5.5 it needs 50 or more.

    Wim Van den Broeck:
    -JPEG2000 support

This doesn't seem very popular here, but if it works well (color conversion is solid) and relatively fast (JPEG2000 is notoriously slow to encode), then it could offer a very useful temp screening workflow.

No more HDCAM-SR decks so we can have 5.1, or lugging an Avid to the screening room. Export a DCP direct from a DNxHD offline and take a hard drive to the screening. Although I could be getting ahead of myself; maybe this feature is just the JPEG2000 encode and the DCP creation still has to be done in a 3rd party app?

I've been looking for something like this for a while. Tried pretty much all the DCP software products, but while some are possible solutions, the good ones come at a hefty price. Looking forward to hearing more about this feature.

    Wim Van den Broeck:
    more later...

    Any more news?!

    New in Media Composer 6.1!

    -AS-02 support!

    -JPEG2000 support!

    -Shoddy MXO2 support!

Oh wait, that last one was already in 6.0. Was kinda hoping they'd remove that feature for 6.1...

Oh well. MC5.5'll do for now (despite the fact I've paid for 6.0...)

    Henrik:

MC 6.1 will still have to undergo moderator testing before it's released, and we have not received any word on that yet. Moderator testing usually takes at least 3 to 5 days, and that's assuming that we do not discover any additional issues that engineering might have missed, which can further delay the release. So, I'd advise you to install 6.0.1 at this time.

Re: just announced at NAB: Media Composer 6.1

    Folks,

MC 6.1 was not " announced" at NAB.  They were shwoing a technology demo of some new features that are expected in a 6.1 but that hasnt been "baked yet" nor do we have any idea on a date.  The next one is 6.0.1.1 which is soon.
