I am very new user to MC5.5.
Long time back, I shot some 1080P/24Frames videos using my SONY PMW-EX XDCAM. Then, I imported those footages from the SxS card using FCP. FCP imported them as .MOV files. Now I am trying to edit those .MOV files using MC5.5. Whenever I import the .MOV file into a bin, I am not seeing the video output when i play it in composer window. Basically, the composer window display looks pure white. I can hear the audio well.
I do not have the original BPAV folder. I have only .MOV files created from FCP.
Any idea, why MC5.5 does not import the .MOV file correctly? I tried different settings found on the import dialog.
I always see a pure white screen on composer windows. is there something I miss here?
I am trying to edit all my old .MOV files using MC5.5. Very new to MC5.5. Appreciate your helps.

Hi Raja,
Generally a white screen means the codec used to create the file is not available on the system. Rather than importing, go to File > Link to AMA File(s) and point to your MOV file. It should then appear in a bin, and you can transcode it to whatever resolution you're working in.

@Moses,Thanks. I am using AVID MC5.5 on Windows. Yes, I can play back the quick time files using the stand-alone quick time player. I used the Sony XDCAM Transfer software to import footates from BPAV folder into .MOV files. The files in BPAV folders are in .MP4 HD format. The codec is "Apple XDCAM EX 1080p24(35Mb/s VBR)". The .MOV files property says Codec is "MPEG-2 Video, linear PCM,Timecode". Not sure if this is Pro-res. Idoubt.
@Carl,I tried the File > Link to AMA file(s). That works now. Is it recommended solution? So atleast I have a solution I hope.
AMA is the best way to start using file-based media where you still have the original media. You keep all data as it was recorded in the camera, and can easily link back to the source media again if you ever need to.
From there, you can consolidate/transcode as needed to make it Avid-managed media.
Apple/FCP does funny things to media to lock its compatibility. When you create MOV files using FCP, they get re-wrapped into Apple's XDCam format, for example, which will only play on computers on which FCP is installed, if I recall correctly. Same goes for HDV. Capture Apple HDV, good luck trying to get it to play on a Windows PC, or a non-FCP Mac, without buying additonal third-party software. Therefore, creating XDCam MOV files in FCP is not something I like to do if there's any chance they might get used on anything other than FCP. Apple XDCam is not ProRes. ProRes is another format. XDCam is a flavor of MPEG-2.
Using XDCam Transfer first to create MOV files, and then importing those, creates three copies of the media (the BPAV, the MOVs, and the Avid media), where if you just AMA in Avid, you still have only the one copy - therefore, no extraneous media. If you consolidate/transcode to get Avid-managed media, you still have only two copies, each with a very specific purpose. Three copies is overkill - you don't need those intermediate MOV files.

Importing and AMA link then transcoding are two ways to arrive at the same result, so it's not that AMA linking is the recommended solution, but rather that it's one of two alternative methods. I prefer AMA linking because it allows you to see the file and make sure everything is ok before transcoding, so that's what I prefer to use whenever possible.
Hope that helps.

What kind of file(s) are you trying to link to?
Its an xdcam HD with 12channel audio
I've just had the same problem. Someone using FCP exported this file. MediaInfo says it's a HDV 1080i file. QT wouldn't play it - black screen but audio played. VLC did play it but it was a bit of a struggle. Sorenson Squeeze 9 also produced a white screen and would crash every time I tried to move through the timeline. And MC5.5 imported it but it also produced a white screen. When I used AMA, I got the following error: AMA Producer Task::Execute AMA Plug-in Unable to Provide Sample.
I used a demo version of the Calibrated{Q} XD Decode codec which made it all work, including in MC. The demo mode has no limitations apart from the watermark it splashes all over the footage! Useful to take a quick look at the footage, if nothing else, before requesting a more playable version of the file from the FCP editor. What would be the best codec to use from a FCP export if they were to send me a MOV file again? Can MC handled ProRes or can FCP export using the DNxHD codec if they install the relevant codecs? Thanks

Install the DNX codecs and FCP can export as dnx but you have to use the QT conversion option and thats a dog.
Yes MC can import or AMA ProRes. PCs can read Prores but not make them.
HDV from FCP is a codec not supported on PC. VLC has it's own internal codecs so is no indication of system codec compatability.
And of course HDV is just 25mbps anmd subsampled to 1440 pixels so pretty poor.
