I am having trouble capturing HDV footage into Media Composer 6 to my eSata drive. I am able to capture without issues to the hard drive in my machine and to the network storage available. Is it possible I am missing something within my settings? I have looked through multiple forums and can't find anything specific about this issue. The error message I receive is "capture abored due to error" and then "Exception: An error has occured while capturing." The eSata drive is functioning properly as I can see footage that had been captured there before and I can still write to the drive outside of Media Composer. The only changes to my system are a recent extra firewire card installation and the actual upgrade to Media Composer 6 from 5.5.
Capturing HDV with Avid is alot like going to Vegas - some rare folks seem to be consistent winners - most everyone else ends up crying.
That being said, capturing HDV will depend entirely on a few things.
1). Make sure your deck is in HDV output mode. Avid hates any deck settings that allow either/both HDV and DV.
2). Make sure your project is set to the right raster - 1440. This can be found in the capture tool itself in MC6, and not in the project settings as it was in 5.5.
3). Make sure your capture setting is set to firewire and not to your Matrox or other hardware.
4). How lucky are you? Avid has never really supported HDV, and I think many there feel their haughty product is above this common format. Using both HDV and Avid is a usually a prescription for suffering over the long run.
I spend most of my time between New York and Los Angeles. In Nebraska.
Aside from your settings, make sure that the only firewire device attached to your system is your camcorder. I have been capturing HDV successfully to MC for quite a long time.

I totally agree with your assessment of AVID and HDV. I have checked all of the options you listed but I am still having trouble capturing footage to my ESATA drive. Again, no problems with the hard drive of the computer or my network drive. Thanks a lot for the suggestions.
I have had past success capturing HDV in older versions by using an HDV to HDSDI converter and going through the Adrenaline. When I finally upgraded to newer versions though (and started using AJA IO EXPRESS), the capture seems to stop every 6 or so minutes without fail unless I turn off the timecode track in the capture tool. It's quite frustrating.
Thanks Denny and Atomike!!!! A 1000 thanks! Your tips combined saved my mind! I'm not sure whether it was the 1440 raster or removing other firewire devices but I don't care- it finally works! Now I get to sit through hours of uncaptured footage! What a pleasure.
