DNxHD not an option with Squeeze 8

I for one will not be upgrading to Squeeze 8.

Not since version 5.1 have I been able to Fast Import DNxHD material for 1080p 23.976 projects encoded with Squeeze. [http://community.avid.com/forums/p/86042/487186.aspx#487186]

Thought I would try with the included version 7 but had the same experience as before.

So I downloaded and installed the verion 8 trial.  This is a 30-day trial of the same Full Professional version that we can have for a $99 upgrade fee.

Now when I try to recreate my DNxHD preset (.mov), DNxHD in not even shown as an option!!!

All the other Avid options are present, but not DNxHD.

This is a show stopper for me.

Thanks, but NO THANKS.  I'll keep my $99 and keep using {almost any other compression utility} because it actually works.

I seem to remember that one of the posts by DaveAvidPM indicated that greater Avid compatibility (Avid codecs?) would be added back into the lite version.
The Sorenson Website has changed the Lites features from no NLE integration to having Avid integration. Marianna has said there will be more information early next week.

Yea, but this is the Full Professional Version 8 I'm showing that doesn't support DNxHD.  Every previous version at least let you pick DNxHD as a codec choice.

Just for kicks I compressed a 1080p 23.976 3:07 minute file using Squeeze 7 Lite and Adobe Media Encoder.  (I would have used Squeeze 8 Professional but can't since choosing DNxHD is not possible.) I used the 175X 10bit codec. Here are the results:

Adobe Media Encoder: compression time - 4:44, Fast Imported into Media Composer in 1:36, looks perfect.

Sorenson Squeeze 7 Lite: compression time - 6:18, Imported into Media Composer in 3:31, strobes with alternating black frames, look horrible, totally unusable.

Granted, Squeeze does a decent job going the other way--creating files for the web from MC reference files, but it's totally useless for creating importable media, at least for 1080p 23.976 projects.

This is just my experience, your mileage may vary.

Why would Sorenson block DNX? That is a dumb decision.

Out of interest did your 3.3.1 have the fix for DNxHD codec's.

Anyhow it is looking likely that Squeeze will remain my fourth, or slip to fifth. choice of go to encoders. Wink

Would you recommend TMPGenc Master Works 5 as a good alternative to Squeeze ? - this encoder programme often crops up on this Forum.

I am not, and never have been, a big fan of Sorenson. This bruhaha with Squeeze 8 pretty much closes any thought I ever had of using it. My standard workflow uses Tmpgenc, Adobe Media Encoder, MpgStreamclip, or Procoder. They all work equally well; and they all accept QTRef files.

    Hi,
I use TMPG and I am totally satisfied with it. Sorenzon not for me to use the results to create MPG2. Now I again made attempts with version 8 and again did not work. The big problem with interlaced fields. Sorenson I'm only as a backup encryption program that will not open some files in TMPG.

Re: DNxHD not an option with Squeeze 8

After all that discussion with Squeeze 8 lite vs Squeeze 8 one of the obvious uses for Squeeze isn't even supported?

That's total crap - I just checked on a full version of Squeeze 8 - no go!

Sorry, I didn't make that clear.  3:31 was the time of the import, not the version.  I used MC 6 for all these tests.

I think so having used it since the original MPEG only TMPGenc version 1a surfaced on the web.

TMPGEnc 5's quality export can't be beaten by anything out there.

IMHO, it's better not only from Squeeze.

And it costs only a few dollars/euros.

Download a trial and judge it.

I don't think you understood my post - DNxHD is NOT available in the FULL Squeeze 8 - it's not just missing from the LITE version - Sorenson has issues!
