    Quadro 1000M or 2000M with a Lenovo ThinkPad W520

I get a bit confused with getting a notebook to run MC6

One qualified system (  Qualified Systems From Avid)  is the  Dell M4600 running a Quadro 1000M   or Quadro2000M

So I am thinking of trying the Lenovo thinkpad W520 - which I have seen some posts saying it is a a good machine for MC55  - although it is not on the list.

I know all machines can't be on the list  .....

So my question is....  Does anyone know is there any reason to get the Qudaro 2000M over the 1000M ?  More cores, more power consumption - but does anyone have any personal experience or general comments on the two graphic cards ?

You can see it like that:

it's better to have a Quadro than a Geforce as Avid says.

Now both can't do GPU acceleration inside MC.

So we don't know if the most expensive will do any difference regarding MC.

Those cards are not really powerful for anything else.

But if you will use them to work on MC and you want to feel that you've

made your best to work with MC buy whatever your pocket can handle.

The 2000 is equivalent to a Geforce 450.

Thanks George - as always, I appreciate your reply.

However, I am still just as confused as ever on this....

re: it's better to have a Quadro than a Geforce as Avid says.

Under:  Download the Datasheet :  It says...
    • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce family, ATI Radeon family (as supported by Apple), or NVIDIA Quadro FX family (FX 560 or higher)* .....  but no mention of QuadroM family.

Under Qualified Systems From Avid  - under laptops - it cites the Dell m4600 - says Quadro 1000M  Quadro  2000M

Under MC6 Supported Devices   it only says Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro FX family3 (FX 560 or higher)

A great post from Marianna a week ago or so says - "For customers that are using PCs and not on the Avid qualified list (Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, etc), we would suggest something like this:

"Good – SD only - Intel Core2duo with 4GB memory and any of the Avid approved graphics cards

Better – SD and HD - Intel i5/i7 quad core with 4GB or more of memory and NVIDIA graphics"  ( does not comment on any specific Nvidia card (Geforce or QuadroM series) AND

"With Graphics acceleration, the Media Composer application sends effects to the graphics card GPU for processing.  This capability is only available with the NVIDIA Quadro cards."  "

But no mention of the QUADRO M series ?

George, you say I believe that the Quadro M and Geforce "can't do GPU acceleration inside MC".  Marianna says "This capability is only available with the NVIDIA Quadro cards".

So after all this, I guess I am still wondering if the Quadro M series does GPU acceleration - and if it is included in Marianna's comments under - Better – SD and HD.    I really don't care about 3D/RGB 444.

I am going to read Marianna's thread again closely - but if anyone has comments or sucesses on the 1000M or 2000M, I am all ears.

I said that because Marianna posted before some time the cards (among Quadros) which can do GPU acceleration.

I think they were some of the higher end.

    I might remember wrong though.

I think also that the SD and HD is a reference to the CPU's mainly.

She will clarify it if she finds time. Do not worry.

She is around but she is toooooooooo busy I guess.

I think you are right - I'm re-reading it and she says

"GPU acceleration only applies to certain NVIDIA Quadro or FX cards (mid range or higher) and there is no GPU acceleration on laptops or low end graphics."

BTW - don't you ever sleep ?  No matter what time I send you a message - you reply almost immediately.....Big Smile

So my question shouldbe "IS ANYONE USING A LENOVO W520 with MC6 - and what video card are you using and how is it working ?
