Hello, not sure if this Question has been touched upon before, if it has, my apologies.
I am wondering about taking footage in at DNxHD36 inititally for offline then transcoding to DNxHD185X for online grading and colouring. In my head it doesn't make sense to transcode from 36 to 85 if the footage was initally brought in at 36, does it work?
Also, is the footage originates from DSLR h.264 8-bit files, do you gain anything from going to 185x for online?
Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated.

Is there no option to re-conform the contents to DNX185?
You can transcode to DNX185 from DNX36 but you are just copying the compression artifacts to a better codec.
What is the delivery method? If it's 10 bit then you will gain by using DNX185X even with 8 bit content. The colour correction will have more quantising detail (1024 as opposed to 256)
But if you output to HDCAM then it gets blown away to 8 bit.
Also take care that you check to see ho it looks in 8 bit. No point producing something great in 10 bit and delivering to find it looks hoorid when it gets dropped to 8 it later in the chain.
Also bear in mind that the datarate for X is the same as the 8 bit so in effect there is more compression happening when yo chose the X 10 bit than if you work at 8 bit. So X maynot be more and better just different.

You can use AMA to relink to the media and transcode to DNxHD 185, or batch import at DNxHD 185 (depending on how you first accessed the footage).
If you can't access those files, then transcoding from 36 to 185 does no good.

thanks for the reply Pat. there is option to transcode to 185 but i didnt hink i would benefit as id taken in at 36 already.
I mean in reality is there benefit in transcoding initially at 185 for DSLR footage? Also as the footage is RGB i should be using an RGB project right? not a 16-235 space?
