I have two systems setup. One on a Laptop running Windows 10 and the other on a PC Desktop running Windows 7. I am running Avid Media Composer 7 on the one licence (I just deactivate and activate depending upon the computer I want to use). Lately I have been using the laptop more as it is faster and I have been in the field. Due to the latest relationship change between AMC7 and Windows 10 I am unable to even start the Avid Media Composer software on the laptop. I have been notified by Avid that basically my only option is to either install Windows 7 on the laptop (the laptop apparently does not support this I have been told so that idea is out the door) or upgrade my Avid to a later version. I'd love to but times are tough.
I need to transfer my current projects to the other computer. As I can't even load the AMC7 up on the laptop to do a consolidate and transcode I simply just copied the Avid Projects to the other PC. The sequences are attemping to connect to the Drive on the Laptop. I have reimported all of the footage and deleted all of the offline files in hopes that Avid will reconnect everything in the Sequences. It has done so with the audio but not the video.
Looking for suggestions please. It's probably staring me right in the face but after 4 days of trying to get the Avid to work on the laptop after it's lovely relationship change with Windows 10 my concentration is at an all time low.
Please help.
Explain what form the media was on the laptop. Was it Linked (AMA)? Was it imported (Avid Media created)? Linked and Transcoded?
If Avid media was created you should be able to copy all of the Avid MediaFiles\MXF\number folders from the laptops media drive into the other machines Avid MediaFiles\MXF\ folder. (You may need to give the copied folders different number names if you already have number folders the new computers Avid MediaFiles\MXF\ folder with the same names.) All transcoded media should then be online. (Unless you have deleted the transcoded clips)Avid creates clips which are simple descriptors of the media and where to find it AND Clip Media. When deleting you get the 2 options, to delete Clips and Clip media. I make a point of NEVER deleting Clips (they take up virtually no space in my Avid Project folder) and then being very careful about what Clip Media I delete when recovering drive space on my Media drivesIf this does not solve your issue detail exactly what you did in the original project and what you have done on the new computer. This should enable us to offer a solution that fits what has been done.
Hello AndrewAction,
Thanks for the reply.
No, none of the clips were linked (AMA). I imported every file into the system when I originally started the project. I am actually currently transferring all of the files from the Avid MediaFiles/MXF folder now to its fellow accomplice folder on the Desktop system. Will let you know how I go.
Slightly backtracking on this subject, I'm not sure you've necessarily been given the correct information about MC version 7 with Win 10 and your laptop not being able to run Win 7.
On the first point, it's true that Avid doesn't support MC 7 with Win 10, but there are users that are running this setup. See the following forum thread as an example.
https://community.avid.com/forums/t/160970.aspx
On the second point, I think it would be quite unusual for a laptop not to be able to run Win 7. Manufacturers like HP can ship downgrades to Win 7 with new machines for those clients who (say) wish to integrate their purchase into an existing Win 7 infrastructure. There may be issues with drivers on some newer hardware, but these can often be resolved with legacy drivers. The only way to test this is by swapping your internal hard disk with a new one, and trying a fresh install of Win 7. If it turns out that you cannot get Win 7 to run, you can simply put your old hard disk back in to return to your original OS.
