Simple question on a perpetual licence:
My support will soon run out. Are we in the same position as in 2014 where if support expires we will be locked to the version we have and unable to upgrade in the future?
or can we let it expire and re join support later to upgrade?
searched for an answer but was left confused!

Avid may still be looking at this "as an issue" but no indication of any change in policy at present AFAIK.

You can install MC on as many systems as you want. You just have to activate/deactivate the license as you move from one to another.

It seems my 2 perpetual licenses expired. So now what? I thought it would auto renew to my credit card.. just like everything else.
My 2 perpetual licenses expired on 1/07/ 2016.. and I didnt think to check.
There is no option to renew it anywhere..
Has something bad happened here? because I was just too tired to notice and pay attention?
Thanks
Tracy

At present we will be locked if we let the support contract expire. ??? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Hello Tracy,
Tracy Granger :At present we will be locked if we let the support contract expire. ??? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
It means you cannot upgrade to the latest version when your support contract expired. You can still work with your MC thus the term locked.

New for MC v8.2.5 ...
"Editing Application Release Date: With this version of Media Composer, Avid Advantage Upgrade & Support plan information will be included in your Media Composer license. In addition, each build (release) of Media Composer will be marked with its release date. Media Composer will compare the active contract dates in the license to the release date of the software to ensure they are compatible. If the release date is within the contract dates, the software will run; if it is outside the contract dates (i.e. the contract has expired), the software will not run. For more information, please see the Media Composer Support Contract License Update FAQ knowledge base article. You will need to update your license and if you are using a dongle, youneed to update the dongle. If you are updating to Media Composer v8.2.5, you will need to be on the most current version of Application Manager."
[Edit] When the Subscription Plan was announced, it was my understanding that if you decided not to renew your contract, your license was "locked" to the current version, but would still work. The notice above seems to indicate that is not the case.
To clarify, if a user is on a version of MC prior to 8.2.5, Dongle licensed, and their contract expires, will their dongle still work?

So we "perpetual" licence holders who are by and large the people who have supported Avid since day one are now to arbitrarily lose our licences if we opt not to maintain our service contracts. When the change over to the subscription model took place we were told that we would be able to continue to use our current version(s) in perpetuity. We lost Boris anyway, we're not entitled to use the version of New Blue that subscribers use but we expected there to be a trade off. We didn't expect to lose the ability to use the software altogether.
Nice one Avid. Yet another justification of my to move to Lightworks, where I have Boris Fx bundled and I have Grafitti bundled, and Fusion runs as a plug in, and I can write my own real-time effects, and, and, and...
jwrl:So we "perpetual" licence holders who are by and large the people who have supported Avid since day one are now to arbitrarily lose our licences if we opt not to maintain our service contracts.
Example: If your support ran out in Feb 2016 you can update to MC 8.5 (not MC 8.5.1 released yesterday) MC 8.4.5, MC 8.3.1, 8.2.6 (but not 8.2.7 released yesterday) And so on for MC 7.x, MC6.5.x, MC 6.0.x and with a dongle MC5.5.x. Any updates for MC 7.x, MC6.5.x, MC 6.0.x and with a dongle MC5.5.x released after today will not be available if your support has lapsed.
I think what jwrl is getting at is that, with almost all software suppliers, if you buy an outright licence then there is an upgrade path for future releases at a lower price as needed.
The new licencing system from Avid does not allow this and you are forced to keep the support up to date in order to get any new versions in the future.
From memory, didnt Avid have an "amnesty" just befor christmas allowing old software out of support to be upgraded?
I agree with jwrl on the loss of Boris BCC, Boris /AvidFX, Avid DVD, , the proper version of Sorenson, etc etc.
But if you miss your expirey date by 1 day.. you have to buy an entirely new licence. Letting my 2 licenses expire was an acccident.
So it seems that Avid wants your lisence to expire so they can charge you again!
M said that reminder emails are sent out but you have to opt in to the "Marketing Program Participation" Which I cancelled because I was getting so many spam emails from them... But I had no idea this was connected to the email reminders.
So I think Avid should send you a reminder thru the Application Manager " Its time to renew your lisence" so if youre working and miss the date you wont be penalized. I had to purchase 2 new lisences from Video Guys yesterday.
Anyway.. have set reminders in my iCal.

There's a 30 day grace period after your license expires:

I realize you're past that point. If I were you, I'd send Marianna Montague an email (marianna.montague@avid.com) and throw yourself on the mercy of the licensing program. Obviously there's no guarantee she can do anything to help, but if anyone can, it's her.
Already contacted the lifesaving Saint M : )
She helped get it all re-registered and current for me.. But no way to do anything more.
I just feel a bit stupid letting it lapse, but editors get busy and tired and this type of thing can slip their minds.
There should be no need for emails at all: the AppMan should notify that the software is about to expire just like it notifies new releases, and the confusing "Upgrade" button in the Support tab should only appear when the software is about to die, as a mean of an extra expiration warning, instead of being there all the time. I'm not putting this as a feature request since if I had a request it would be for pulling off the AppMan altogether.
